AKTU Counselling Process Explained

Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU), Lucknow, does not conduct admissions on its own. Instead, all UG and PG technical seats across AKTU-affiliated institutions are filled through UPTAC — Uttar Pradesh Technical Admission Counselling, a centralised, merit-based online counselling system. This guide breaks the entire process into simple, sequential steps so you know exactly what to expect and when.

1. What UPTAC/AKTU Counselling Covers

  • It is the single counselling window for admission to B.Tech, B.Arch, B.Pharm, MBA, MCA, and several other professional courses.
  • Seats are offered across all AKTU-affiliated/constituent institutions, plus a number of other state universities and colleges (such as HBTU Kanpur, IET Lucknow, BIET Jhansi, KNIT Sultanpur, MMMUT Gorakhpur, and AKGEC Ghaziabad).
  • Admission is based on scores from national/state-level entrance exams — mainly JEE Main for B.Tech, and CUET UG/PG or other specified exams for courses like B.Pharm, MCA, and MBA.

2. Step 1 — Check Your Eligibility

Before registering, confirm you meet the basic entry conditions:

  • Qualified JEE Main (for B.Tech) or CUET UG (for other courses) — for CUET candidates, AKTU must have been selected as a participating university at the time of the CUET application itself; otherwise you won’t be eligible through the main rounds.
  • Passed Class 12 from a recognised board, with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects for B.Tech.
  • Minimum qualifying marks as prescribed by the authorities (this can vary slightly by category).
  • Domicile of Uttar Pradesh gives priority in the main counselling rounds, though candidates from outside UP can still participate, especially in the special rounds.

3. Step 2 — One-Time Registration

  • Registration happens only once, usually through the official portal (uptac.samarth.edu.in or the linked UPTAC site), and cannot be redone in later rounds.
  • You will need your JEE Main/CUET application number, name, mother’s name, date of birth, and gender to begin.
  • An APAAR ID (Academic Bank of Credits ID), generated through DigiLocker, is typically mandatory before registration can be completed.
  • Fill in personal details and entrance exam information carefully — corrections are usually not allowed after submission.
  • Verify your registration using the OTP sent to your registered mobile number and email address.
  • Pay the one-time, non-refundable registration fee (around ₹1,000) via UPI, debit card, credit card, or net banking.

4. Step 3 — Document Upload and Verification

This is one of the most critical stages, since choice filling only unlocks after your documents are cleared.

  • Upload clear scanned copies (JPG/PDF) of required documents, which generally include:
  • Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets and passing certificates
  • Entrance exam admit card and scorecard
  • Category/caste certificate (if applicable)
  • Income certificate (for reserved category or fee waiver claims)
  • Domicile certificate
  • Photo ID, photograph, and signature
  • Transfer/migration certificate, where applicable
  • A Central Document Verification Team checks all uploads. You’ll get an SMS and email confirming success — or a query if something is unclear.
  • If your documents are rejected or flagged, you’ll get a correction window to re-upload before the verification deadline, so check your email and portal login regularly.
  • Category or sub-category claims must be backed by valid certificates at this stage; requests to change them later are usually not entertained.

5. Step 4 — Choice Filling

Once verified, you move to the most strategic part of the process:

  • Log in with your registration ID and password.
  • Browse and select your preferred college + branch combinations from the full list of participating institutions.
  • Arrange your choices in strict order of preference — this ordering directly affects which seat you’re offered.
  • Lock your final choice list before the deadline; once locked, it generally cannot be edited for that round.
  • It helps to fill in a large number of choices (not just your top 4–5), since a longer list improves your chances across multiple rounds.

6. Step 5 — Seat Allotment

  • Based on your rank, category, and the choices you filled, the system runs an allotment algorithm and generates a seat offer.
  • Download your allotment letter once results are declared.
  • For each round, you typically get three options:
  • Freeze — accept the seat and pay the seat acceptance fee to confirm it; you exit further rounds (unless you choose to upgrade later, depending on the round’s rules).
  • Float — accept the current seat provisionally but stay in the running for a better seat in the next round.
  • Withdraw — exit the counselling process entirely (allowed only in specific rounds, usually with a partial refund of the acceptance fee after deductions).
  • The seat acceptance fee is generally around ₹20,000 for General/OBC candidates and ₹12,000 for SC/ST candidates; this amount is later adjusted against your final admission fees at the college.
  • Missing the seat acceptance fee deadline leads to immediate cancellation of the allotted seat — there’s no grace period, so keep funds ready and set reminders.

7. Step 6 — Reporting and Admission Formalities

  • Physically or digitally report to your allotted institute within the given window, carrying original documents and the acceptance/allotment letter.
  • Complete the admission formalities at the institute, including final fee payment as required by that college.
  • Failing to report in time can result in cancellation of your seat, even if you’ve paid the acceptance fee.

8. Understanding the Rounds

UPTAC/AKTU counselling typically runs across multiple stages:

  • Main Rounds (Round 1 to Round 4): The core allotment rounds based on your locked choices and rank.
  • Internal Sliding Round: For candidates who have already reported/frozen a seat but want a chance to slide into a better option among already-reported candidates.
  • Special Rounds: Conducted later (often in August) to fill vacant seats. These are usually open to a wider pool, including JEE Main, CUET UG, and Class 12 merit candidates from anywhere in India, not just UP domicile students.
  • New candidates who missed earlier rounds can typically register and pay the counselling fee again specifically for the special round.

9. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Entering the wrong JEE Main/CUET application number — always copy it directly from your admit card.
  • Uploading blurry or invalid scanned documents, which causes verification delays.
  • Filling too few choices, which limits your options in later rounds.
  • Missing the seat acceptance fee deadline, which leads to instant loss of the allotted seat.
  • Assuming category/sub-category claims can be edited later — they usually can’t once submitted.

10. Quick Recap

  1. Check eligibility (JEE Main/CUET UG + Class 12 with PCM for B.Tech).
  2. Register once on the official portal and pay the registration fee.
  3. Upload and get your documents verified.
  4. Fill and lock your choices in order of preference.
  5. Receive your seat allotment and choose Freeze, Float, or Withdraw.
  6. Pay the seat acceptance fee before the deadline.
  7. Report to the allotted institute and complete admission formalities.
  8. Track further rounds (sliding/special) if you want to upgrade or haven’t secured a seat yet.

Note: Dates, fee amounts, and exact procedural details are notified fresh each admission cycle. Always cross-check the current year’s schedule and requirements on the official UPTAC/AKTU counselling portal before making decisions.
